Re.:
Hubris & Power Addiction and Recovery
...right now I’m looking at one of the
cassette recordings that I have been transferring from analogue to digital and
then from speech to text … I recorded it
in 2002 on the 31st day of November,
with the title “Weil [on the subject of] power addiction” - Oppression and Liberty.
I
remembered we were discussing then what the “knub”
is …...
I
was suggesting it is this central problem of the perennial corruption of all
of the truly spiritual ideological works anything opposed to the compulsory
Mammon worship; every scripture, text or performance bent to the imperial
agendas via media domination- media being, in my definition, synonymous with
the word technology i.e. “The extensions of the human.” This very same thesis
was expounded by Innis in his Media
Bias and Empire and
the elaborated cc. was cloned for mass info-overload via his student (the
good guy) Marshall McLuhan, who has already described that getting out of
what I call “the technological chair’ is like peeling the skin off your back
...this
image was also so very graphically portrayed in [the military industrial governmental
propaganda] Sci-Fi film The
Matrix in
the scene where the hero victim is ejected from embryonic prison and dumped
into the cesspool … and
previously more precisely rendered in Galbraith’s non-fiction work —
The
New Industrial State
It
is the problem of the indoctrination of the masses and what Ellul
describes as “Orthopraxy”
So
what can be done about it? “Do the same things over and over again and expect
different results?” I think not, that is the 12 Step definition of insanity. i.e.:
like going for a daily robotic walk, as I am often catching myself in the
process of doing … in exactly the same place, time and gait, year in and year
out and expecting that some new revelation will manifest itself. The definition
of “a rut” I heard once in recovery circles is “a grave with open ends.”
The
alternative might, on the other hand be, to abandon all strategies and preset
itineraries and to “get the false ego off the centre of the universe” - Zen Beginners
Mind -
and
to go for an actual meditation walk, knowing and accepting that “only God knows
where you might end up”. We resist of course, It just does
not seem like acting in a “rational” way in the face of our beloved “benevolent
technocracy.” Here I like J.R.Saul’s critique in Voltaire’s Bastards, of what he calls “The
Dictatorship of Reason.” In 12 Step
recovery, i.e. in Workaholics Anonymous and my Media Anonymous, we learn “To Play.”
see.: Anne Schaef’s The Addictive Organization and Dian Fassel’s Working
Ourselves to Death …
Some
would argue that we can navigate our way through the Labyrinth of Technology …although that would be the equivalent, in
my understanding, of the Alcoholic learning how to become a social drinker, not
very likely… “ Once an addict always an addict.” I do
not see how a money (media) addict - like the sick puppy who orchestrated 9-11
to collect insurance money – will ever recover through the 12 Steps - if this
indeed is the only way “back to the garden”- but taking his et al, inventory is
not my business…“Principles before Personalities.” I do know that all we can do
is take care of our own square on the grid and that if we are “not part of the
solution then we are part of the problem”
…PEACE
BEGINS AT HOME !!!
You
are invited join me in a meditation walk …in the tradition of all who those who have walked for peace in all the centuries past.

Love, Peace and Prosperity to all
